Gingivitis prevention tips
Are your gums red? Swollen? Do they feel tender to the touch? Are your gums receding from some of your teeth? Do they occasionally bleed when you brush?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, you have signs and symptoms of gingivitis! Dr. Shields can determine the severity and cause during an exam, but it’s important to act now to prevent it from worsening.
Gingivitis occurs when bacteria collects at the gum line and causes redness and inflammation. Untreated gingivitis develops into periodontal disease which can lead to tooth loss and oral surgery. Gingivitis itself is easily remedied as long as it’s caught early on. At home, you can prevent gingivitis with a few simple routines:
- Brush teeth at least twice a day or after every meal
- Floss at least once a day to remove food particles from between teeth
- Regular dental visits twice a year
- Regular professional dental cleanings
If you’ve got any of the signs and symptoms of gingivitis, act now! Contact Dr. Shields for an exam that can get you back on track to dental wellness!
